Webasto Thermo Top C won’t start – the most common causes

Walther Vega |

Short answer: If a Webasto Thermo Top C won’t start, the reason is often simple: too little fuel in the tank, a weak battery or a blown fuse. After several failed starts the unit also locks itself. If the cause lies in the heater itself – such as the glow plug, combustion air fan, control electronics or a coked combustion chamber – it can usually be repaired.

Especially at the start of the heating season, many parking and auxiliary heaters develop problems: they don’t start, run briefly and switch off again, or smoke when starting. Before you remove the unit, it is worth checking a few simple causes.

Things you can check yourself first

  • Fuel level: The heater usually draws fuel through its own line, which sits higher in the tank. If the tank is less than about a quarter full, the heater often won’t start.
  • Battery voltage: If the battery is weak, the heater switches off for protection or doesn’t start at all – especially in cold weather.
  • Fuse: A blown heater fuse disables the unit completely.
  • Controls: Are the time and timer set correctly? Does the remote control still have battery power?
  • Winter diesel: In severe frost, summer diesel can gel in the thin fuel line to the heater.

If the unit has locked itself

After several unsuccessful start attempts or overheating, the Thermo Top C locks itself. It then no longer responds to any start command, even if the actual cause has long since been fixed. The lock can usually be cleared with a diagnostic tool. If the heater still doesn’t start afterwards or locks again, there is usually a fault in the unit.

Common causes inside the heater

  • Faulty glow plug: Without a working glow plug the fuel is not ignited. Typical sign: several start attempts without a flame.
  • Faulty combustion air fan: The fan supplies the combustion chamber with air. A short circuit or a blocked motor leads to fault messages and shutdown.
  • Coked combustion chamber: Frequent short trips and many short heating cycles cause deposits. Result: flame failure, smoke, diesel smell.
  • Faulty control electronics: The electronics in the heater monitor flame, temperature and voltage. If they fail, the unit often does not respond at all.
  • Dosing pump or temperature sensor: These components outside or on the unit can also prevent a start and should be checked as well.

The fault memory shows the exact cause. Have it read out before removing the unit – this saves time and helps us with the diagnosis.

Signs that a repair is needed

  • The heater won’t start despite a full tank and a good battery
  • It starts but switches off again after a few minutes
  • A lot of white smoke or diesel smell when starting
  • It locks again immediately after being unlocked
  • The fault memory contains entries for flame, glow plug, fan or overheating

Repair instead of a new unit

A new heater is expensive. In most cases your existing unit can be repaired. At Compramas we repair the Thermo Top C at a fixed price from €300, depending on the vehicle manufacturer. Alternatively, you can get a reconditioned exchange unit if you need it quickly. All repairs and exchange units come with a 12-month warranty. Shipping is free within Germany and costs €25 to other EU countries.

Frequently asked questions

Can I repair the Thermo Top C myself?
Simple checks such as fuse, battery and fuel level: yes. Work on the heater itself involves fuel, exhaust and the cooling circuit – that belongs in professional hands.

Is a repair worthwhile on an older vehicle?
Usually yes. A repair normally costs only a fraction of a new unit, and you keep your matching original unit.

Which unit do I have?
The part number on the type plate tells you. Feel free to send us a photo or call us on +49 5671 7664710.
